Heading into the new year, organizations might want to reexamine their behaviors and attitudes towards ageism in the workplace. A new study by MyPerfectResume found that 99% of workers over the age of 40 believe there is at least some degree of ageism in the workplace.

Whether it's ageist stereotypes, bullying or subtle cultural pressures to conceal their age, many employees over the age of 40 often admit they struggle to feel accepted due to their age.

The study findings suggest some concerning trends for older employees whose experience and maturity is often undervalued in the workplace. The report found that 92% of employees over 40 say they have felt pressure to conceal their age or downplay their experience to avoid negative perceptions.

Older employees admitted that they often adjust how they act and speak at work to avoid standing out due to their age. Eighty-eight percent of employees surveyed said they have adapted their language or behavior to fit in with younger colleagues at least some of the time.

The study shares that ageism in the workplace can negatively affect workers, eroding their confidence and sense of belonging. Ninety-five percent of workers over the age of 40 agreed with this sentiment, stating that age-related stereotypes have affected their feelings of inclusion in the workplace.

Unfortunately, many workers find that the judgement goes beyond subtle actions with 86% of older workers saying that they believe they are targets for workplace bullying due to their age.

With 81% of employees agreeing that age stereotypes are alive and well at work, the study recommends that organizations step in and take action to combat ageism within their workplace.

“Organizations need to shift culturally to recognize age diversity as a strength, valuing the skills and experiences of older employees rather than marginalizing them,” the study said.
