Pentagon Federal Credit Union has opened its sixth location in Puerto Rico, where it has been expanding for at least five years.

The credit union, based in McLean, Va., was the nation’s fourth-largest credit union based on its $30.5 billion in assets on March 31. However, it ranked 29th in number of branches, serving its 361,144 members through 46 branches.

While PenFed’s overall branch count has shrunk over the past five years, it has expanded in Puerto Rico. It had three of its 56 locations in Puerto Rico in December 2019. This past March, it had six of its 46 offices in the territory.

PenFed has the third-highest branch count in Puerto Rico. Baxter Credit Union of Vernon Hills, Ill. ($6.2 billion in assets, 361,144 members) has nine branches and Caribe Federal Credit Union of San Juan ($752.1 million in assets, 61,224 members) has seven locations.

PenFed held a ribbon cutting ceremony July 9 for the new branch in Humacao, 50 miles southeast of San Juan.

Elsewhere, Kirtland Credit Union of Albuquerque, N.M. ($1.1 billion in assets, 52,065 members) held an opening ceremony Tuesday for a new branch in Albuquerque to replace one at 6440 Gibson Blvd.

The new 2,500-square-foot branch is in the MaxQ@Kirtland development, a mixed-use project situated off Gibson Boulevard in partnership with Kirtland Air Force Base through an Enhanced Use Lease (EUL).

President/CEO Matt Rarden said the branch is part of a development that is adding energy to the community. “MaxQ@Kirtland is helping reimagine the Gibson corridor into a vibrant destination — full of opportunity, innovation, and the kind of local growth and economic vitality that lifts everyone,” he said.

Kirtland had 10 branches on March 31, unchanged than a year earlier.

  • AmeriCU Credit Union of Rome, N.Y., about 40 miles east of Syracuse ($2.8 billion in assets, 169,402 members) is holding a grand opening celebration Wednesday for its North Utica branch, 17 miles southeast of Rome. It had 19 branches on March 31, unchanged than a year earlier.
  • Communication Federal Credit Union of Oklahoma City ($2.2 billion in assets, 128,861 members) broke ground June 27 for a new branch in the Deer Creek area, about 100 miles north of Oklahoma City, and on July 1 opened a new branch in Lawton, about 85 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, replacing one nearby. It had 25 branches on March 31, one more (+4.2%) than a year earlier.
  • Educational Systems Federal Credit Union of Greenbelt, Md. ($1.3 billion in assets, 90,658 members), just northeast of Washington, D.C., announced July 9 that it has completed renovations at its branch at 169A Smallwood Village Center in Waldorf, Md., about 30 miles south of Greenbelt. “These improvements reflect our ongoing commitment to providing convenient, accessible and modern financial solutions to support our members’ evolving needs,” President/CEO Girado Smith said. It had 15 branches on March 31, unchanged from a year earlier.
  • Hudson River Community Credit Union of Corinth, N.Y., about 50 miles north of Albany ($335.8 million in assets, 32,928 members) held a grand opening July 11 for a new branch to open early next year in Greenwich, N.Y., 23 miles southeast of Corinth. It had five branches on March 31, unchanged than a year earlier.
  • Navy Federal Credit Union of Vienna, Va., just outside Washington, D.C. ($190.2 billion in assets, 14.5 million members) plans to open a second branch July 21 in Columbus, Ga., WTVM of Columbus reported July 8. It had 368 branches on March 31, nine more (+2.5%) than a year earlier, and two more (+0.5%) than three months earlier.
  • Veridian Credit Union of Waterloo, Iowa ($8.2 billion in assets, 354,418 members) announced July 1 that it has begun building a new branch on Logan Avenue in Waterloo to replace one inside a Hy-Vee grocery store that closed in June 2024. The new branch, which is expected to open next summer, will offer the same services that were offered in the former in-store branch with the addition of drive-up access.

“When we learned that we’d have to close our branch located inside the former Logan Avenue Hy-Vee store, we knew it would create a financial desert and we understood the hardship that creates in our community,” President/CEO Renee Christoffer said. “We’re grateful to have found a way to continue serving our members here in person.”

Veridian had 32 branches on March 31, unchanged from a year earlier.
