The African American Credit Union Coalition and the Government Printing Office Federal Credit Union (GPOFCU) are rallying support for the family of Latonya Allen-Amerson, chief lending officer at GPOFCU, whose husband, Noah Amerson, was fatally shot while the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary in Puerto Rico.
Last week, authorities in Puerto Rico arrested Elias Perez Cruz, who allegedly shot Amerson in front of his family at an Airbnb property near San Juan in June. Cruz reportedly fled the scene with Amerson’s clothing, cash and a pair of sneakers, according to WFMY News 2 in Greensboro, N.C.

Cruz, 24, remains in custody on a $2.75 million bond. Authorities charged him with first-degree murder, WFMY News 2 reported.
Noah Amerson, 39, was a Greensboro native.
“In a heroic act, LaTonya’s husband, Noah Amerson, tragically lost his life protecting his family,” the Duluth, Ga.-based African American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) said in a prepared statement. “As the family begins to process this heartbreaking loss, we’re raising funds to honor Noah's life and help support his children and loved ones during this time of mourning and healing. This gesture is one way we can show love, solidarity and community support. Please consider donating and sharing. Every contribution matters.”
Latonya, who has worked at the $29 million GPOFCU in Washington, D.C., for 20 years, also serves as the Greensboro chapter liaison for the AACUC.
“Thank you for the love, prayers and support. It means the world to our family,” Latonya wrote on her LinkedIn page. “As we continue through this difficult time, any help — through donations or shares — is deeply appreciated. We are a family of 13, and your kindness truly makes a difference.”
The AACUC has posted a donation page on its website to support Latonya’s family.
Memorial services for Noah Amerson will be held July 11 and July 12.
