Employees, directors and community members attend the March 21 opening of Sentinel FCU’s Liberty Branch in Box Elder, S.D.
A small credit union in South Dakota opened a new branch last month that pays homage to service members attached to the Air Force base that has been home to the credit union since its founding in 1955.
Sentinel Federal Credit Union ($189.1 million in assets, 9,528 members) announced March 24 that it had opened a new branch by the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, about 1.5 miles south of Sentinel’s headquarters in the Ellsworth Air Force Base Commissary near Box Elder, S.D.

Ellsworth Air Force Base opened in 1941 and trained B-17 bomber crews that fought in Europe during World War II. It is now home to the 28th Bomb Wing of B1-B Lancers.
President/CEO Dorothy Voorhees said the branch represents the credit union’s “dedication to support a growing Box Elder community.”
The building’s design mimics an airplane hangar, paying homage to Sentinel’s roots on Ellsworth Air Force Base and complementing the nearby South Dakota Air and Space Museum. It includes a mural by local artist Aaron Pearcy, which showcases the history and impact of Ellsworth Air Force Base and the Box Elder community.
“We take great pride in our origins on base and in honoring the legacy of those who have served, protected and contributed to this community,” Voorhees said. “The Liberty Branch represents not just an expansion of our services, but also a symbol of our dedication to being a trusted financial partner — one that stands strong and unwavering, just like our Sentinel name suggests.”
NCUA data showed Sentinel had seven branches and other locations Dec. 31, unchanged from a year earlier.
