Authorities in Virginia and Delaware are investigating two credit union robberies that occurred on Saturday, leaving one suspect dead.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew in Virginia said during a press conference that 39-year-old Steven Williams of Hampton and two others were involved in an armed robbery at a Jefferson Avenue branch of the $178 billion Navy Federal Credit Union.

After Williams allegedly showed a weapon during the robbery, he was given a bag that contained an undisclosed sum of money. Police responded to the incident shortly before noon, spotted the suspect’s vehicle and cornered it at a shopping plaza.

With their weapons drawn, police officers gave commands for the driver to exit the vehicle, Chief Drew said.

Although two persons got out of the vehicle, the third person, Williams, got out of the car with a firearm in his hand.

“He points that firearm as he is getting out of the vehicle in the direction of the officers,” Chief Drew said.

After police shot Williams, he was transported to a hospital where he died.

Delaware State Police are searching for a man who allegedly robbed a branch of the $1.8 billion Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union and then carjacked a minivan on Saturday morning.

At about 10 a.m., troopers responded to Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union branch on Quintilio Drive in Bear, Del., for a robbery.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a male suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Timothy Halsey, entered the credit union, allegedly presented a demand note and ransacked the property of credit union employees, police said in a prepared statement.

Halsey fled the credit union on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. More than a thousand feet from the branch, Halsey walked into a parking lot where he allegedly accosted a victim and stole a 2020 gray Honda Odyssey minivan.

Halsey is described as a white male and bald, with a goatee and tattoos on his neck and legs, according to Delaware State Police.
