The APG Federal Credit Union board of directors said Don W. Lewis retired last week as its president/CEO after 45 years of service.

Earlier this year, APG EVP Chuck Kelly was named interim CEO. The board launched the process in search of the next CEO, according to the credit union’s prepared statement released Tuesday. Kelly joined the credit union’s executive team in 2017 as CFO. Before the credit union, Kelly worked nearly 15 years consulting with credit unions as a senior audit manager with CliftonLarsonAllen LLP.

“Don has made a profound impact on APGFCU, its membership and the community,” APG Board Chair Donald J. Burnett said. “He leaves a foundational legacy for all of us to carry forward, a legacy that is deeply intertwined with the very fabric of our credit union.”

Lewis began his career at the Edgewood, Md.-based APGFCU in 1979, working in credit operations. He went on to hold positions of increasing responsibility until he was appointed president/CEO in January 1995.

During his CEO tenure, the credit union increased assets from $275 million to $2.3 billion, while loans grew from $209 million to $1.8 billion, and membership expanded from 64,351 to more than 160,000, according to NCUA Call Reports.

Many of the programs APGFCU offers today began with Lewis’ vision for the credit union and its mission of generational wealth-building, which included financial education, youth initiatives, educational programs at a high school and college, and credit builder loan programs.

In recognition of his contributions to the credit union movement, he was inducted into the African American Credit Union Coalition Hall of Fame in 2018.

“We thank Don for his decades of visionary leadership and passion for the credit union movement,” Burnett said. “APGFCU is stronger than ever and well-poised to realize its potential to help present and future generations build their wealth.”

APG’s 394 employees operate 15 locations throughout Maryland.
