Rhode Island’s Coastal1 CU Promotes 7

Plus, four executives are inducted into the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders and DDJ Myers hires a new director.

The $3.3 billion, Pawtucket, R.I.-based Coastal1 Credit Union announced seven promotions.

Carlos DaCunha

Carlos DaCunha was promoted to SVP, commercial lending and business banking. In his new role, he will be responsible for the management and growth of the credit union’s commercial loan portfolio, which includes real estate, business lending and cash management solutions, while overseeing the day-to-day activities of the department. He is also charged with adherence to regulatory requirements and procedural development. DaCunha has been with the credit union since April 2022 and most recently served as SVP of commercial lending. He has over 37 years of experience in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Coastal1, he held the following positions: Chief lending officer with St. Anne’s Credit Union ($1.1 billion, Fall River, Mass.), SVP at Webster Bank and regional president with Millennium bcp of Banco Comercial Português SA. In addition, he is treasurer and executive director of Bristol County Business Development Consultants, advisory director of UMass Dartmouth’s Charlton College of Business, a member of the New Bedford CEO Council and a past member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Economic Development Planning Council. He holds an MBA from Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

Laura Frazer was promoted to vice president/deposit operations. In her new role, she will be responsible for the overall management of the deposit operations team, in addition to providing insight into payment channels and the inherent risks involved. She has over 24 years of experience in the banking industry and most recently served as assistant vice president of operations for Coastal1.

Andrew Olejarz was promoted to assistant vice president/information security. In his new role, he will be responsible for governance, risk assessment, business continuity, incident response management and overall information security education within the credit union. He has been with Coastal1 since 2018 and most recently served as information security analyst.

Debra Boory was promoted to vice president/regional manager for the Northern Retail Banking Region. She has over 25 years of experience in the banking industry and most recently served as assistant vice president/regional manager for Coastal1. Boory serves on the Board of Directors for the Northern RI Chamber of Commerce.

Alyson McCabe was promoted to vice president/regional manager for the Eastern Retail Banking Region. She has over 17 years of experience in the banking industry and most recently served as assistant vice president/regional manager for Coastal1.

Monica Silva was promoted to vice president/regional manager for the Southern Retail Banking Region. She has over 17 years of experience in the banking industry and most recently served as assistant vice president/regional manager. Silva is the treasurer of The Pawtucket Soup Kitchen.

Melvin Cardona was promoted to assistant vice president/regional manager for the Central Retail Banking Region. He has been with the credit union since 2022, most recently serving as branch manager. Cardona has over 20 years of experience in the banking industry. All regional managers are responsible for the performance of their respective regional branches by delivering directional oversight into member service standards, new member acquisition, deepening existing member relationships and adherence to operational standards.

Four executives were inducted into the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the credit union industry through leadership, innovation and dedication to the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”

Alan Meyer, president of the $964 million, Bethalto, Ill.-based 1st MidAmerica Credit Union, received the recognition. Meyer has been with 1st MidAmerica since 2002, holding various roles before assuming the role of president in 2013. He has served on the Board of the Illinois Credit Union League since 2010, and on CUNA’s NARP/NAF Steering Committee and Advocacy Committee. Meyer has also served as Champaign Chair for the Southwest Illinois District of the United Way, on the board of the Riverbend Growth Association and on the Metro East Regional Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society.

Mike Valentine, president/CEO of the $5.8 billion, Vernon Hills, Ill.-based Baxter Credit Union (BCU), received the recognition. Valentine has been with BCU for nearly three decades and is currently the Board chair for TruStage, serves on the CUNA CEO Council Executive Committee and serves on the VISA Client Advisory Council.

Julia Havens, president/CEO of the $7.4 million, South Saint Paul, Minn.-based Riverview Credit Union, received the recognition. Havens has led Riverview since 1999 and has been elected to the Board of the Minnesota Credit Union Network for 12 years.

Dan Stoltz, CEO of the $2.1 billion, Falcon Heights, Minn.-based Blaze Credit Union, received the recognition. Stoltz was named Outstanding Professional of the Year by the Minnesota Credit Union Network in 2015, as well as sits on the league’s Political Involvement Committee and has served on its Board for 12 years, including as chair from 2016-2019. He was also named a Most Admired CEO by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal and selected as a 2018 Regional Finalist for the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

DDJ Myers, a leadership development firm and ALM First Company, hired Darlene Dumont as director, organizational development. Dumont brings over 30 years of experience in organizational transformation, executive coaching, succession planning, human-centered design, strategic workforce analysis, organizational design, operational efficiency, continuous improvement and innovation. A retired captain of the U.S. Air Force/Air National Guard, she brings experience working in a variety of industries including credit unions, financial institutions, health care, insurance, manufacturing and federal, state and military agencies. She is also a Board member of the Continuous Improvement Lean Collaborative and a Lean sensei/faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute. She holds a doctorate in business administration and quality systems, holds master’s degrees in management information systems and quality systems management, is certified in organizational design and has a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
