A Texas police officer is recovering from injuries after he was shot by a man in the branch lobby of the $1.2 billion Fort Worth Community Credit Union.

Brent Brown, 35, who was working an off-duty security job in uniform, confronted Leland Williams, 35, who pulled a handgun when he walked into the Meadowbrook branch on Brentwood Stair Road during the afternoon on Nov. 27, police said. In an exchange of gunfire, Brown was shot in the upper chest and lower abdomen, local news media reported.

The branch lobby is closed until further notice, but its drive-thru service is open, according to a notice posted on the credit union’s website.

Williams fled the scene and was later captured less than half a mile away where he lived.

After undergoing surgery at a hospital, Brown was alert, talking and his prognosis was good, according to a Nov. 28 prepared statement from the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. Brown has been working as a Tarrant County Sheriff Deputy for 12 years.

Williams was booked in the Tarrant County Jail on the charge of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, police said. His bail was set at $1 million.
