As the 2023 holiday season kicks off, many credit unions are placing an added emphasis on their charitable donations and volunteer projects, as well as evaluating the impact of their efforts in their communities over time. Navy Federal Credit Union's commitment to its approximately two million veteran members recently took center stage, as Navy Federal team members helped build homes for veterans in need in communities in Atlanta, Dallas and Arlington, Va.

In partnership with Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit that creates safe housing for vulnerable populations through essential home repairs, volunteers with the $168.4 billion, Vienna, Va.-based credit union participated in three Veterans at Home rebuilds, providing home modification and repairs for aging veteran homeowners at no cost. Navy Federal's Real Estate Lending division sponsored the rebuilds, the credit union said.

"We know homeownership offers a sense of pride; it's something our members and the veterans on this project value," said Fred Quick, who is SVP of mortgage lending at Navy Federal and volunteered at the Veterans at Home rebuild project in Dallas. "It's truly rewarding to have the opportunity to come together as a team and spend our time helping them with home improvement projects. It shows our team is committed to not only our service to our members, but to going above and beyond in their communities as well."

Navy Federal has partnered with Rebuilding Together for over two decades. In that time, it has helped to complete at least 30 revitalization projects supporting local homeowners and nonprofit organizations, many of which serve veterans in the area. What's more, in total, more than 1,400 Navy Federal volunteers have contributed over 10,000 volunteer hours to Rebuilding Together's mission, exceeding $380,000 in community impact, according to the credit union.

More than 75% of the approximately 18 million veterans living in the U.S. are homeowners, and many face accessibility challenges due to aging and/or disabilities connected to military service, with roughly 1.5 million veterans living below the federal poverty level, according to Navy Federal.
