The new CU's goal is to deliver financial services to an area where more than one in four residents don't use a federally-insured financial institution regularly.

Young Community Federal Credit Union of Shively, Ky., has been granted a federal charter and share insurance fund coverage, the NCUA said Wednesday.

The new credit union is sponsored by the Young Non-Profit Foundation, which provides “innovative solutions to childcare challenges and enables families to obtain employment or to further their education,” according to its mission statement. The foundation also provides a scholarship program to help individuals transition into college or trade school, and a meal program to help families needing meal support for their children over weekends when childcare is unavailable.

The 501(c)(3) organization posted $793,168 in total assets and total revenue of $857,578 in revenue at the end of 2021, its IRS Form 990 showed.

The NCUA said Young Community will primarily serve low-to-moderate income communities in central Kentucky.

“Young Community will open doors to insured financial services in an area where more than one in four residents do not use a federally insured financial institution regularly,” NCUA Chair Todd Harper said in a prepared statement. “The organizers of this new credit union have deep roots in their community, and they will address economic disparities and provide financial education to their members. Thanks to everyone involved for making this credit union a reality.”

The credit union will initially operate from the foundation’s headquarters in Louisville, the federal agency said.

During its first year of operations, Young Community Federal Credit Union will focus on basic savings and lending services, including share accounts, share draft accounts, new and used auto loans, small unsecured loans, direct deposit, online access, debit card and ATM access.

Young Community’s charter became effective Nov. 8 and it expects to commence operations as soon as possible, the NCUA said.

The credit union is the third federal financial cooperative chartered this year. In 2022, the NCUA chartered four federal credit unions.
