A new American football season brings new credit union-football team partnerships – this week, between Northwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) and the Washington Commanders.

The $4.6 billion, Herndon, Va.-based NWFCU announced Thursday it has entered a multi-year partnership with the Commanders, the Washington, D.C. metro area’s NFL team. As part of the partnership, NWFCU will serve as the team’s official credit union as well as see its name displayed at the team’s home stadium in North Englewood, Md., FedExField – the stadium’s Joe Gibbs Club Level will be renamed the Joe Gibbs Club Level Presented by Northwest Federal Credit Union. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Commanders. This franchise has deep ties to our members and to the region as a whole, as do we,” NWFCU President/CEO Jeff Bentley stated. “Our organizations share a common passion for giving back to the community and helping those in need. We look forward to working together and continuing to support the people of the National Capital Region over the coming years.”

In addition, NWFCU will be the presenting partner of the Commanders’ “High School Game of the Week,” a new initiative designed to spotlight high school football matchups and recognize excellence throughout the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia football communities, according to the announcement. As part of the initiative, Washington Legend Youth Football Ambassadors will travel to select high school football games throughout the fall season to engage with students, distribute Commanders swag and present a $1,000 donation to each high school football program on behalf of the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation.

What’s more, NWFCU will serve as presenting partner of the “Commanders Read” community program and the “Field Goal” feature on the Commanders Radio Network for all radio broadcasted games. Commanders Read is an education-focused program developed to encourage learning and reading among fourth and fifth grade students in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.; this year, the Commanders will provide 2,500 books to different schools and organizations.

“We’re proud to partner with Northwest Federal Credit Union. We care about staying connected to our community and finding ways to support local institutions that serve our fans, our local businesses and the Washington region,” Washington Commanders President Jason Wright stated. “We’re looking forward to working with NWFCU to give back to the community with programs like the ‘High School Coach of the Week’ and our ‘Commanders Reads’ program.”

The Washington Commanders, owned by a group of investors led by Managing Partner Josh Harris, were founded in Boston in 1932 and are one of the original members of the NFL’s Eastern Division. The team relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937.
