Nearly 93% of bank and credit union robberies are committed by men in their 30s, according to the U.S. Sentencing Commission.

So when Danville, Calif., police officers responded to a robbery in progress at a Patelco Credit Union branch at 12:30 p.m. on June 30, they didn’t capture the usual suspect.

Instead, they arrested a 16-year-old girl.

“Officers arrested a 16-year-old female juvenile who attempted to rob the bank by passing a demand note,” Danville police reported in a prepared statement. “No weapons were used during the robbery. The juvenile was booked into Juvenile Hall in Martinez.”

Police did not say what was written on the note or whether the incident remains under investigation. Police declined to comment on whether an adult may have coerced the 16-year-old suspect to commit the crime.

“We have nothing further to release at this time,” Danville police said.

“The safety and well-being of our staff, members and the communities we serve is our top priority,” officials with the $9.6 billion Patelco Credit Union said in a prepared statement. “We are grateful there were no injuries, and we are working with law enforcement as they investigate the incident.”
