Union employees of TruStage, formerly CUNA Mutual Group, in Madison, Wis., voted on Tuesday to extend their strike against the insurance and investment company while negotiations for a new labor contract were expected to take place on Wednesday.

Following a presentation to hundreds of members and what the union described as a robust discussion, workers voted 94% to extend the strike beyond the one week initially authorized in April, according to the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 39, which represents more than 450 TruStage employees.

The strike was to end after Thursday. The extension vote authorized the strike to continue through June. Future extensions are also possible, OPEIU said in its prepared statement.

In response to the union’s decision to extend the strike, TruStage said:

“We are determined to reach a fair and competitive agreement with OPEIU Local 39. We continue to meet with the union and exchange proposals – we delivered a proposal today, are meeting with the union tonight and are scheduling additional times to meet. We’ll continue to work with the Union to reach an agreement.”

The union began its strike last Friday after both sides could not agree to a new labor contract.  TruStage and OPEIU remain at odds over wages, retirement, health care, remote work and job security.
