Notre Dame Federal Credit Union was among the nation's fastest growing credit unions last year, and this year the Indiana credit union will get a boost with the addition of a new employer segment.
On Monday, Notre Dame FCU announced its Select Employer Groups (SEGs) now include the City of South Bend employees, retirees and family members. The city, population 10,353 in 2021, is Indiana's fourth largest and now has 1,100 eligible employees.

Those eligible must deposit at least $5 into a savings account to become a member for life. Upon joining, all immediate family also becomes eligible.
South Bend's mayor since 2020 is James Mueller, a graduate of Notre Dame University, where the credit union was founded. He previously served as chief of staff to former mayor Pete Buttigieg, who joined the Biden administration as Secretary of Commerce in 2020.

"I thank Notre Dame Federal Credit Union for providing new opportunities for our hardworking public servants in the City," Mayor James Mueller said. "It is important that we continue to show our appreciation to our dedicated employees and connect them to resources for them and their families to thrive."
Notre Dame FCU's assets surpassed the $1 billion mark last year. Its assets grew 22% to reach $1.1 billion on Dec. 31. The credit union was the nation's 399th largest by assets, but it ranked 114th among the nation's 4,863 credit unions by its percentage growth in assets.
The credit union's 62,633 members are served by 11 branches, eight of them in the South Bend area and two in Arizona that opened in 2022.
It also has a branch in Whiting, Ind., 80 miles west of South Bend and just east of Chicago. Last October it added a SEG with the School City of Whiting, which has 1,200 students and about 70 teachers.
