The Tampa (Fla.) Police Department said shortly after 6 a.m. on Friday, officers responded to a report of a person who had been shot outside Suncoast Credit Union at 1920 E Hillsborough Ave.

The victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body, was transported to Tampa General Hospital where the person was later pronounced deceased.

Suncoast said the victim was not an employee.

“This is an ongoing investigation and details are not fully known at this time, but Suncoast is fully cooperating with law enforcement and will assist in the investigation,” Darlene Johnson, EVP of the $16.2 billion Suncoast, said in a prepared statement. “We mourn the loss of this victim’s life and offer our sincere condolences to their family and friends for this senseless crime. Safety and security are our highest priority, and we will continue our vigilance for the sake of our members and our hard-working team.”

The branch, which is just four miles west of Suncoast’s headquarters at 6801 East Hillsborough Ave., has been temporarily closed and is scheduled to reopen on Monday, according to the credit union’s website.

“Detectives are actively working through leads,” Tampa Police said.
