Members of the $67 million Creighton Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Omaha, Neb., were notified Monday of limits to debit card transactions after officials discovered “a very high number” of fraudulent activities.

A red-banner alert at the top of the credit union’s website stated, “Creighton Federal is experiencing a very high number of fraudulent online debit card transactions. To protect our members and limit or stop this fraud, only one online debit card purchase will be allowed per day for a short period of time.”

While it states “a short period of time,” the limits have been in place for multiple days and it did not indicate how much longer the debit card purchase limits could continue.

It was unclear when the credit union noticed the fraudulent activity or what alerted credit union officials to make the decision to limit online debit card transactions.

The alert to Creighton Federal’s 9,517 members also stated, “In-person debit card purchases at retailers, or ATM transactions are not affected and will still be allowed. If you need to do more than one online purchase per day, please call 402-341-2121 and request an exception. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”

Creighton Federal has four branches in Omaha and one branch in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
