Professionals Conclude 2022 With New Roles
Five credit unions reveal People news and Curql Collective elects two board members.
MIDWEST
The $2.8 billion Corporate Central Credit Union in Muskego, Wis., hired Chuck Doherty as an executive account manager. In his new role, Doherty will proactively develop strong relationships with senior level management of Corporate Central’s growing membership, promoting the organization’s products and services while assisting leadership with marketing strategies, business plans and sales objectives. He will also evaluate the needs and challenges of the nation’s largest credit unions to build new solutions to Corporate Central’s suite of service offerings. Doherty spent more than 25 years at Fiserv in a variety of roles including leading a sales organization; managing relationships with large, complex clients; managing remote deposit of checks as a product in the earliest days of the technology; and directing the company’s public relations. Earlier in his career, Doherty directed public relations and advertising at a Milwaukee, Wis., area bank and grocery chain, and was a business reporter at newspapers across the country.
The $607 million, Battle Creek, Mich.-based OMNI Community Credit Union hired Scott Johnston as chief digital officer. In his new role, Johnson leads all cross-collaborative digital projects in keeping with OMNI’s strategic objectives. He is also responsible for driving digital transformation to ensure the credit union increases operational efficiency. Johnson brings over 40 years of experience in financial tech, having most recently spent 18 years at the CUSO Member Driven Technologies, including as EVP and COO.
Jose Garcia, president/CEO for the $63 million, Morton Grove, Ill.-based Northwest Community Credit Union, joined the board of directors of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC). The IHCC contributes to the financial strength and well-being of Hispanics by helping businesses grow, creating jobs and driving prosperous communities.
SOUTH
The $1.6 billion, Sumter, S.C.-based SAFE Federal Credit Union promoted Wayne Keels to vice president of continuous improvement and project management. Keels’ career in project management began more than 20 years ago and included prior service at Motorola, Allstate and Discover Financial Services. He joined SAFE in 2018 as director of continuous improvement and was promoted to assistant vice president of continuous improvement and project management in 2021. He holds an MBA in marketing and project management from DeVry University in Naperville, Ill. His continuous improvement and project management expertise includes strategy execution, systems integration and lean six sigma.
The $2.8 billion, Tampa, Fla.-based GTE Financial announced two promotions.
Michael Simon was promoted to assistant vice president of investments. He most recently served as investment program manager for GTE. In his new role, Simon will lead the charge to grow the investment program while meeting members’ financial needs.
August Hopf was promoted to assistant vice president of insurance agency. Hopf joined GTE as the insurance agency manager and principal in 2020, bringing over 20 years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry.
CUSOS
The Des Moines, Iowa-based Curql Collective announced two board elections.
Darlene Johnson was elected to her first term on the board of managers. Johnson brings 34 years of credit union experience and currently serves as EVP and chief growth officer for the $15.7 billion, Tampa, Fla.-based Suncoast Credit Union. She also created the CUNA COO Roundtable and co-founded the Hernando County Women’s Correctional Institution Financial Lit program.
Ron Amstutz was re-elected to the board of managers for a second term. He currently serves as EVP for the $8.2 billion, Phoenix-based Desert Financial Credit Union. Amstutz has worked in the credit union industry for 40 years and holds experience in driving business performance, managing risk and developing strategy. He is also a national Credit Union for Kids Advisory Board member.
