A Charlotte, N.C., credit union completed the final step in its process of merging with another North Carolina credit union this week: Renaming itself.

The $1 billion Charlotte Metro Federal Credit Union, which merged Premier Federal Credit Union of Greensboro in 2021, is now called Skyla Credit Union, the credit union announced on Wednesday. Also accompanying the new name is a new tagline: "Believe in Better."

According to Skyla, the refreshed brand, which it developed with the Brevard, N.C.-based branding agency Tungsten, now lives on its website, online banking, mass media advertising and other member communications. The credit union said it plans to transition the signage for its 17 branch locations, formerly known as Charlotte Metro and Premier branches, over the next few weeks.

On Skyla's new website, an FAQ section dedicated to the name change explained to members that the credit union first explored the idea while pursuing its merger with Premier, but the project became delayed due to other organizations looking to trademark a new name at the same time.

"Following the merger of Charlotte Metro and Premier FCU, we knew we needed a brand that would embrace all of the communities we serve while symbolizing our mission to teach, guide, direct and educate our consumers so they may live a richer, more meaningful and expansive lifestyle," Skyla President/CEO Eric Gelly stated. "The new Skyla brand embodies our vision – building financial freedom for all – by providing the support and personalized banking experience to help you plan, implement and actually achieve your goals. At Skyla, we are focused on meeting you wherever you are in your financial journey with the tools, guidance and resources that turn possibility into reality."

The website also noted that Skyla was chosen because it is an "upbeat, affirmative and aspirational name that speaks to the limitlessness that our consumers long for," as well as "warm, relatable and welcoming."

Skyla serves approximately 93,000 members and operates branches throughout the Greensboro and Charlotte regions, as well as in five other North Carolina cities and Rock Hill, S.C.
