A former Mississippi credit union CEO’s trial is set for next year after he pleaded not guilty to allegedly embezzling $15,000.

Stephen Hopkins, who served as president/CEO of the $9.3 million HealthPlus Federal Credit Union in Jackson for nearly three years, entered his plea at the First Judicial District of Hinds County on July 11. His trial date has been scheduled for April 23, 2023, according to court records.

Last year, he left HealthPlus, which serves employees of the Mississippi Department of Health, to become the director of administration for the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.

According to a grand jury indictment, the 42-year-old Hopkins allegedly embezzled at least $15,000 of the credit union’s funds starting in January 2019, nine months after he was appointed CEO in April 2018.

The embezzlement allegedly continued over the next two years, according to the indictment.

Hopkins’ attorney, Damon R. Stevenson in Jackson, did not respond to CU Times’ requests for comment.
