The National Credit Union Foundation said Friday it has committed a minimum of $100,000 from its CUAid program to support Louisiana credit union employees and volunteers affected by Hurricane Ida.

A grant will be made to the Louisiana Credit Union League to coordinate specific individual donations to those who need disaster relief.

“Ida is still wreaking havoc across the eastern seaboard, and we’re actively working with other organizations in those areas to identify need,” Danielle Brown, director of engagement at the Foundation, said in a prepared statement. “It will be some time until we know the full extent of damage, but we can support our credit union peers in Louisiana right now.”

The CUAid program is run by the foundation to support credit union employees when natural disaster strikes. Historically, the foundation would solicit donations prior to distributing dollars. Following a series of catastrophic events in 2017, however, CUAid was restructured to provide immediate response.

“Hurricane Ida has impacted more than half of the credit unions in our state,” Angela Melle, vice president of member engagement at LCUL, said in a prepared statement. “CUAid demonstrates that the credit union movement is more than just words – we’re about action, purpose and support for one another.”

There are 166 Louisiana credit unions, according to the NCUA.
