Careers Grow & Conclude at 9 Credit Unions
The Cornerstone League and Humanidei + O’Rourke also reveal People moves.
WEST
The $15.6 billion, Riverdale, Utah-based America First Credit Union announced three promotions to the C-suite as well as nine additional staff promotions.
Scott Ellis was promoted to chief information officer. With more than 40 years with the credit union, Ellis has risen from the procurement and controls department to SVP of information systems to his current promotion to CIO.
Troy Stevenson was promoted to chief digital, product and retail officer. Stevenson has worked for America First more than 22 years in a variety of roles, including SVP of product and business intelligence and as a market research analyst.
Missy Key was promoted to CFO. Key began her career at the credit union in 1988 as a student trainee in member service and most recently served as SVP, controller and risk officer.
America First also promoted the following people to SVP and vice president positions:

The $1.84 billion, Bremerton, Wash.-based Kitsap Credit Union hired Preston Monroe as digital channels manager. In his new role, Monroe will manage existing digital services such as online, mobile and tablet access, as well as develop new digital products and channels such as voice and Internet of Things. As a member of the support services team, he will be responsible for developing and executing the rollout of new digital banking services to compliment Kitsap’s branch and ATM delivery strategies. He will also act as the primary liaison between the credit union and its digital vendors, while ensuring Kitsap’s digital services are strategically selected, configured and executed to meet the needs of its members. Monroe brings over 27 years of experience in the digital financial industry.
EAST
The $276.5 million, Fort Kent, Maine-based Acadia Federal Credit Union hired Joey Cannan as EVP. In his new role, Cannan will assist Acadia’s president/CEO in the management of operations and financial performance of the organization. In addition, he will be responsible for overseeing the work of the senior leadership team to ensure that policies and programs promote sound credit union operations and management. Cannan brings 25 years of banking and mortgage industry experience to Acadia. Over the last 10 years, he held various management positions with Bangor Savings Bank, his most recent role being SVP and director of operations. He holds an MBA from Maine’s Husson University.
The $287 million, York, Pa.-based First Capital Federal Credit Union hired Michelle Bahn as manager of human resources and training. In her new role, Bahn will be a member of the management team, focus on the employee experience as a positive driving force for member experience, and provide team members with the tools they need to effectively do their jobs. Prior to joining First Capital, she worked for the $7.9 billion, Harrisburg, Pa.-based PSECU as payroll information systems manager. Bahn has been in business management for more than two decades, with prior experience in human resources, accounting, payroll, benefits and mentoring/business advising. Before PSECU, she worked for the P.H. Glatfelter Company and was a co-owner at RSB and Associates, P.C.
MIDWEST
The $3.7 billion, Eau Claire, Wis.-based Royal Credit Union announced three promotions.
Jean Zimmer was promoted to mortgage technology support manager. Zimmer joined Royal in 2010, and in her new role, she will lead a team to provide support to the mortgage department and guide mortgage initiatives focusing on member and team member experience.
Andrea Tomac was promoted to mortgage processing manager. Tomac joined Royal in 1995, and in her new role, she will oversee the processing teams for mortgages and home equity lines of credit to ensure they are processed in a timely and accurate manner, as well as manage vendor relations.
Katie Luther was promoted to mortgage servicing and closing manager. Luther joined Royal in 2017, and in her new role, she will work closely with the mortgage closing and mortgage servicing supervisors to plan, organize and direct their team’s activity.
The $5.4 billion, Waterloo, Iowa-based Veridian Credit Union promoted Jenifer Ward to the position of learning and development specialist. Ward has worked at Veridian for five years and was previously a loan advisor in the member contact center.
The $209.9 million Gerber Federal Credit Union in Fremont, Mich., announced four promotions.
Ellen Davis was promoted to vice president – human resources. Davis joined the credit union as a human resources professional in 2003 and was promoted to assistant vice president – human resources in 2012. She is responsible for all aspects of HR from payroll, benefits administration, and Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations/administration to organizational development and facilitation. As a member of the senior leadership team, she will participate in the strategic planning process, budget development, organizational development and annual operational plan development. She holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the HR Certification Institute as well as a SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) certification.
Heather Wiersema was promoted to marketing officer. Wiersema joined the credit union as marketing manager in 2004, and is responsible for all aspects of marketing, advertising, public relations, member event planning and business relationship development. She holds the Credit Union Certified Marketing Executive (CUCME) certification from CUNA.
Jessica Broad was promoted to assistant vice president – compliance and risk management. Broad joined the credit union as a part-time teller in 2005 and served as a mortgage processor prior to becoming compliance officer in 2014. She will continue to lead the internal audit and compliance departments responsible for ensuring the strength of the compliance program, including policies and procedures that are designed to safeguard credit union assets and comply with all state, federal and local regulations. As a member of the senior leadership team, she will participate in the strategic planning process, budget development, organizational development and annual operational plan development
Tina Spoelman was promoted to senior information technology manager. Spoelman joined the credit union as an information systems college intern in 2007 and has held numerous positions with increasing responsibility in the IT department. Spoelman will continue to lead the IT department and is responsible for networking systems, computer hardware and software, and all technology needs of the organization including the various digital channels available to membership.
Debbie Mickelson, division president of Electrus, a division of the $1.69 billion, Falcon Heights, Minn.-based SPIRE Credit Union, announced her retirement following a 33-year career in credit unions. She was hired by Electrus, then known as Local 292 IBEW Credit Union, in September 1993 as vice president of operations.
SOUTH
The $2.8 billion, Nashville, Tenn.-based Volunteer Corporate Credit Union hired Dale Goode as regional member development representative. Goode holds extensive experience within the credit union movement, most recently serving as vice president, senior sales executive for TransFund. Prior to his tenure at TransFund, he held positions with CULIANCE, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions and the $5.1 billion Corporate America Credit Union in Irondale, Ala. Goode has over 20 years of consultative sales experience with areas of expertise that include EFT processing, ATM and point of sale networks, and mobile banking.
LEAGUES
The Cornerstone League, which serves credit unions in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, hired three employees.
Sarah Bowman was hired as engagement consultant and program manager. Bowman brings seven years of credit union experience to Cornerstone, having most recently worked on the marketing team at the $697 million, Tulsa-based Oklahoma Central Credit Union. In her new role, she will serve small credit unions and lead the Young Professionals (YP) program.
Ericka Calvillo was hired as engagement consultant and relationship manager. Calvillo is a 20-year credit union veteran who has worked as a director of strategic services, training specialist and marketing director. In her new role, she will serve midsize-to-large credit unions.
Shoaib Salamat was hired as SVP of administration. Salamat has been in the financial services industry for 20 years, having served primarily as a controller at various financial institutions. Among his specialties include internal controls, financial reporting and monitoring, and SOX process management. In his new role, he will oversee Cornerstone’s financial reporting, accounting and administrative functions.
VENDORS
Humanidei + O’Rourke, a human capital strategies firm serving the credit union industry, hired Carl Clark as senior consultant: diversity, equity and inclusion. Clark joins the firm after almost 13 years with the $3.1 billion, Raleigh, N.C.-based Local Government Federal Credit Union, where he served as business/membership development officer. He holds an MBA from Pfeiffer University. In his new role, Clark will work with clients to design and implement strategies that create inclusive workplaces. This includes recruiting diverse candidate pools as well as creating large-scale DEI strategies that lead to organization-wide change management, evaluating and coaching on areas like career path and performance management programs that lead to internal equity; building DEI advisory groups or employee resource groups that support inclusion; evaluating products, programs and systems that create equity; and conducting training and research to improve the employee experience.
