Hiway Credit Union members short on cash and low on energy will be able to get a jolt of both late this month when it opens a new branch five miles northwest of its headquarters in St. Paul, Minn.

The Roseville branch, its first new branch in 20 years, will share its space with a new Dunkin’ donut and coffee shop.

Hiway ($1.5 billion in assets, 78,950 members) has put the launch of its first branch in 20 years in the hands of Tara Graff, Hiway’s SVP of marketing and business development.

“The new branch provides both a high-tech and a high-touch experience, and, of course, treats and coffee,” Graff said. “What could be better than that/? It’s a fun new way to take care of your financial errands.”

The new Hiway branch will offer members new service channels, including an in-branch team, Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) and a three-lane drive-thru.

Dunkin’ will also offer drive-thru service along with indoor and outdoor seating, a full menu of baked treats and breakfast sandwiches, and hot and cold beverages. This will be the fifth Dunkin’ store for Taneja Companies in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market.

Hiway currently has three other branches in the area: The credit union’s main branch in St. Paul, a branch in Minneapolis and a branch in a Department of Transportation office in St. Paul.

Last year, Hiway secured a state charter, dropping “Federal” from its name, and expanding its field of membership to include more counties. It said it planned to build new branches to serve the areas and Roseville is the first.

Hiway’s branch expansion runs counter to the recent trend of declining branches. Credit unions had 21,515 branches in U.S. states and territories on Dec. 31, 449 fewer than a year earlier. Branches had risen slowly in 2017, 2018 and 2019, with a net gain of 182 branches in the states and territories.
