Registration for the first-ever virtual CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference opened this week.

The 2021 CUNA GAC will be held March 2-4 and attendees will use the Social27 virtual event platform during the three-day conference.

CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle said, "Attending CUNA GAC takes on new urgency in these tumultuous times."

He continued, "Credit unions have played a critical role helping Americans manage the financial impact of the pandemic and it's imperative we share this story with lawmakers—especially new members of Congress. I strongly urge my fellow credit union advocates to join us virtually in March."

After months of discussions, as the pandemic wore on, CUNA announced in August that there would not be an in-person GAC next year. At the time of the announcement, Todd Spiczenski, CUNA chief products and services officer said, "It might feel a little different, but the goal of coming together to strengthen the credit union system is more important now than it's ever been. We're bringing all the features our participants have come to expect, from world-class keynoters and breakout sessions covering the biggest issues facing credit unions, to unparalleled networking and advocacy opportunities."

According to the CUNA announcement, the conference will be "delivered in real time using a full-feature, interactive digital platform. The online format will integrate many of the conference's most popular events including live speakers and breakout sessions, a virtual exhibit hall, and the opportunity to (virtually) Hill Hike."

The virtual platform Social27 was chosen by CUNA for this event and details about why that platform was chosen are unclear. CU Times has not been able to determine the cost to CUNA for using the platform's services and how it compares to the cost of holding the in-person event. Statements by sources about the costs have not been able to be verified by CU Times.

In a statement this week, Spiczenski said, "Certainly, this conference will be different than in the past, but our purpose and mission remain intact. This format will facilitate the advocacy, learning, and networking that CUNA GAC is known for, while allowing more emerging leaders to participate—and that will drive a range of long-term benefits for the system."
