In just two weeks, the $1.9 billion Rogue Credit Union raised more than $1 million, which will be used to help families and communities affected by the wildfires that destroyed thousands of structures, devastated towns and displaced thousands of people in Oregon.

What’s more, another Oregon credit union, the $485 million Clackamas Federal Credit Union in Milwaukie, donated $15,000 for wildfire relief on Friday.

Rogue, based in Medford, Ore., launched its fundraising initiative on Sept. 9 and announced Wednesday that it surpassed the $1 million mark.

“We are so proud to be part of such an incredible effort,” Rogue President/CEO Gene Pelham said. “Rebuilding what the fires destroyed will be a long road, but with outpouring of support from donors, we will be able to help our community rise from this, stronger than ever.”

The credit union matched the first $100,000 in donations. Most of the donations, both large and small, came from a variety of people, businesses and foundations, and other credit unions. Contributions also came from individuals in England, Italy, Japan and Australia.

After the credit union announced the fundraising initiative, news spread quickly about it through social media channels. As of Wednesday, well over 4,500 people had made donations.

About a half dozen Rogue employees lost their homes to the wildfires, while many more had been evacuated. Fortunately, every employee has been accounted for and is safe, the credit union said.

Rogue said the funds will be channeled to local non-profits that support local families, communities and relief efforts affected by the Almeda/Glendower, Obenchain and other surrounding fires.

Clackamas FCU President/CEO Aaron Goff said the devastation of the wildfires hit very close to home.

“In our own community, over 100,000 acres have burned,” he said. “Many of our members, friends, family and neighbors have lost or been displaced from their homes or live in areas that are still impacted. Our hearts go out to everyone suffering either directly or indirectly by these fires. Clackamas is here to help members, staff and our community through this devastating crisis.”

Of the credit union’s $15,000 donation, $10,000 will go to the Red Cross Northwest Response Fund and $5,000 to the Clackamas Emergency Services Foundation.

As of Friday, the Red Cross has provided more than 5,800 shelter stays, 30,393 hotel stays, nearly 1,500 safe and well registrations, and more than 84,000 meals.

Clackamas FCU is also delivering care packages to members impacted by the fires. In addition to offering emergency relief loans, the credit union said it dramatically lowered rates for RV and auto loans to help those who need temporary shelter or a new vehicle.
