Dallas police are searching for a male suspect who fatally shot a security officer while he was servicing an ATM at the $898 million Neighborhood Credit Union branch on Cockrell Hill Road in Dallas on Monday.

At about 8:50 a.m., Dallas Police officers arrived at the scene where they saw the security officer of an ATM management company laying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to witnesses, the security officer and his partner were servicing the credit union's ATM when they were approached by a male suspect, wearing a black jacket with the word "police" written on the back. Carrying a rifle, he "demanded property," DPD said.

The suspect shot the security officer identified by police as 28-year-old Jose Montes.

After taking "the property" believed to be a duffel bag from the armored vehicle parked next to the scene, the gunman fled in a white Volkswagen Passat that was driven by a female, police said.

Although Montes was alive while he was being transported to an emergency room, he later died from his injuries at a local hospital, Sgt. Warren Mitchell said during a press conference Monday.

The other security guard who was outside of the armored vehicle during the fatal incident was not injured, Sgt. Mitchell said.

"We are still in the early stages of this investigation," he said.

The FBI also is involved with the investigation.

According Neighborhood CU's website, the Cockrell Hill Road branch is temporarily closed.

The credit union did not respond to CU Times' request for comment.
