Navy Federal Employee Fatally Shot Outside Florida Branch
Police investigators are searching for the suspect, who knew the woman.
Police investigators are searching for a gunman who fatally shot a Navy Federal Credit Union female employee Tuesday morning outside of an Orlando, Fla., branch.
“The [surveillance] video captured the whole incident – it was very clear what he did,” Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón said during a press conference near the Navy Federal branch on Garden Parks Boulevard.
Chief Rolón said the female employee was trying to get into the Navy Federal branch when she was fatally shot.
“You could tell [from the video] she was surprised by what was happening,” he said.
Although police indicated the employee apparently knew the gunman, Rolón did not disclose what the relationship was.
Because the incident is under investigation, Rolón declined to reveal additional details about the shooting when questioned by local reporters.
Even though Rolón said the victim’s next of kin had been notified and some of her family members were at the scene of the crime, he did not identify the employee or the suspect. He indicated a description of the gunman would be released later if necessary. Two people reportedly witnessed the fatal shooting.
“We’re putting all of our resources in play to try to locate him [the suspect] as soon as possible,” Rolón said. “But we do hope that if he is listening to turn himself in. We want to make sure we get his side of the story. We want to make sure the rest of this process ends peacefully.”
In a prepared statement, Navy Federal said: “This morning, a team member was fatally injured during an act of violence outside our Millenia branch, by a man she knew, according to the police. Our thoughts are with our team member’s family. Our number one priority is keeping both our members and team members safe. We will ensure all team members at the branch are provided with the support they need during this time. Any further information can be provided by the Orlando Police Department.”
The Orlando PD said no additional details or updates about the incident were being publicly released as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
