An Alexandria, Va.-based credit union said it is hosting a series of virtual proms for local high schools that fall within its field of membership later this month.

The $166 million Democracy Federal Credit Union is teaming up with DJ J. Soul, who will take requests live from students at H.D. Woodson, T.C. Williams, Bishop McNamara and Suitland high schools – all of which are located within the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region.

The virtual proms for those schools will be held on either May 23 or May 30 and will be hosted through ZOOM. A separate prom will be held for Democracy FCU members on May 30.

DJ J. Soul has previously donated his time hosting virtual proms to high school students in San Diego.

“There are two things you look forward to the most in your four years of high school, and that’s prom and graduation,” J. Soul said, as quoted by ABC 10news San Diego.

Democracy FCU’s team-up with DJ J. Soul comes as other credit unions try to make up for the milestones that have been cancelled as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Another group of credit unions have been touting the accomplishments of graduating seniors this week through the #weCUgrads social media campaign.

“As with many cancellations due to COVID-19, proms and graduations across the country have been cancelled, leaving students unable to enjoy the high school traditions that they look forward to throughout the year. Democracy FCU is standing up to this COVID-19 shutdown and throwing a virtual prom for students to attend from home,” the credit union said in a press release.

Even though the pandemic has made it all but impossible to, in Democracy FCU’s words, “[reserve] the best table at the trendiest restaurant,” students at those high schools can enter a contest to win a dinner delivery the night of the dance.

“Students are encouraged to dress in their prom formal wear and enjoy social distancing with their friends from their living rooms,” the credit union said in the release. “They will also be able to enjoy the traditional crowning of the school’s Prom King and Queen.”

The credit union is encouraging students who take prom pictures during these events to post them on social media using #DFCUProm2020. Details about the proms will be distributed by the high schools themselves. Democracy FCU members looking to partake can visit democracyfcu.org for details.
