Alabama police investigators said a 30-year-old man was fatally shot by his former brother-in-law during a confrontation in the parking lot at the Boaz, Ala., branch of the $686 million Family Security Credit Union on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Colton Craig McKinney of Crossville, Ala.

Boaz police said the suspected gunman, Jossie Cheyenne Bowen, 26, of Boaz, and his sister, the ex-wife of McKinney, went to the credit union after learning McKinney was there. Police did not identify the ex-wife who has not been charged.

After the ex-wife and Bowen arrived in the parking lot at the Family Security branch, they allegedly confronted McKinney over a joint account that he still co-owned with his ex-wife.

During the confrontation, police said, McKinney was shot at the parking lot’s south side.

After Boaz police were called to the scene at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday, police officers found Bowen in the credit union branch lobby where he was arrested and taken to the Boaz City Jail. Police said they found the alleged murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, in Bowen’s back pocket of his pants.

Police investigators said they interviewed several people who witnessed the incident.

Although medics performed CPR on McKinney, he died before they could transport him to a hospital.

Bowen has been charged with murder. His bond was set at $200,000.

Family Security did not respond to CU Times‘ request for comment Friday.
