A Las Vegas man was charged Thursday with attempting to murder his mother after he allegedly shot her three times at a branch of the $110 billion Navy Federal Credit Union, according to police reports.

On Wednesday morning, William Cass Jackson allegedly held his mother at gunpoint since 6 a.m. at her home and forced her to go to the Navy Federal branch on Spring Mountain Road to withdraw $2,000, after which he allegedly shot her three times, police and local media outlets reported.

“There was one member who was injured during the act of violence at our branch on Spring Mountain Road in Las Vegas,” Dietrich Kuhlmann, Navy Federal’s senior vice president of branch operations, said Friday. “None of the Navy Federal team members were physically injured during the situation. Members of our team were able to respond quickly to help the injured member until emergency responders arrived.”

After the mother, who was not identified, withdrew the cash she attempted to escape in an office with a sliding glass door.

“He (Jackson) then fired the first round through the glass and he struck her,” Brett Zimmerman said, assistant sheriff of the Las Vega Metropolitan Police Department. After the first shot was fired, members and employees ran out of the branch.

“He (Jackson) went back into the room (where his mother was) and shot her two more times, and at that point he removed the money that she withdrew from the account and left the bank,” Zimmerman said.

The mother was transported to a hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She was listed in stable condition on Friday and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

LVMPD said officers were called at 9:11 a.m. to the scene where witnesses directed police to the armed suspect’s location at a nearby parking lot.

Driving his patrol car to the parking lot, Officer Michale Simmons saw Jackson pointing a gun at him. Simmons fired three shots through the windshield missing Jackson who began running and fired two shots at Simmons who was not hit. Officer Simmons returned fire discharging two rounds, police reported.

Jackson ran to another parking lot where he barricaded himself behind a parked car and dumpster enclosure. Crisis negotiators and SWAT officers surrounded Jackson who surrendered without incident after a two-hour standoff.

Jackson faces multiple felony charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault, domestic battery, battery, burglary, robbery, discharging a gun in a prohibited area and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, according to police.

Records show Jackson’s bail was set at $300,000. He remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.

Navy Federal has detailed action plans for a variety of situations, including the kind of incident that occurred Wednesday.

“We were able to quickly deploy counselors to help our team members who were in the branch at the time of the attack,” Kuhlmann said. “Our first priority is making sure our team members receive the help they need to deal with the stress involved with the incident.”

The branch was immediately closed on Wednesday, remained closed on Thursday and reopened Friday.

“Our team members will continue to have access to counseling and other resources they need following the shooting,” Kuhlmann said. “I and the entire Navy Federal team are focused on serving our great members in Las Vegas. Our thoughts are also with the victim of the attack, and we hope she is able to make a speedy recovery.”
