Constructing Playgrounds & Honoring Fallen Police: Community News
This week’s news includes a donation to a veterans support group and a bake sale benefiting a breast cancer patient program.
The $2.2 billion Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach, Va., partnered with the Roc Solid Foundation to host a playground build. Members of Chartway’s board of directors and senior leadership team worked together to construct the playground for four-year-old Landon, a Newport News, Va., local who is currently receiving treatment for neuroblastoma. The morning was filled with helping hands, drill bits, nuts, bolts, screws and smiling faces as the Chartway leadership team assembled the playground from the ground up. By noon, Landon’s family had arrived onsite for the big reveal and was floored by the beautiful playground that will play such a key role in Landon’s fight and recovery.
Carl Casper (left), EVP and COO at the $688 million Connex Credit Union in North Haven, Conn., and Louise Nestor (right), director of marketing at Connex, present a $2,500 donation to Michelle D’Amore (center), executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut. As part of its ConnexCares philanthropic initiative, Connex offered new members the ability to open a checking account, and for every account opened, Connex donated $50 to the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut. The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut is a temporary home away from home for families of children who are being treated at nearby hospitals and health care facilities.
The $566 million Financial Plus Credit Union in Flint, Mich., raised $5,212.40 during its Annual Pink Night Palooza bake sale on Sept. 27. All of the proceeds raised from the one-day sale stay in the local community to directly benefit Hurley’s Breast Cancer Patient Navigation Program, a vital year-round free program that helps local men and women during cancer treatment and recovery. The program identifies gaps within patient care and assists with financial hardships a patient might encounter.
Employees from the $190 million Members First Credit Union in Manchester, N.H., present a $7,500 donation to the Manchester Police Athletic League at the annual Footrace for the Fallen 5k event on Oct. 6. The event honors the memory and sacrifice of the community’s fallen police officers. Employees of Alaska USA Foundation, the charitable arm of the $7.9 billion Alaska USA Federal Credit Union in Anchorage, Alaska, present a $3,000 donation to the United States Veterans Support Group, Inc. of Barstow, Calif. Their programs assist veterans and their families with transportation to and from appointments, and with filling out and processing the necessary paperwork to obtain benefits and find employment opportunities. In total, the Alaska USA Foundation donated $78,000 to several nonprofits in Alaska, Arizona, California’s High Desert and Washington.
