Credit Unions Give Back to Students & Local Organizations
Recent community efforts benefit the Humane Society, Bite of Reality and a local Rescue Mission.
Employees of the $1 billion Member One Federal Credit Union in Roanoke, Va., deliver school supplies to Breckinridge Middle School in Roanoke. Employees of the credit union purchased a variety of much-needed items for area students as part of the financial institution’s annual Pens, Paper and Promise School Supply Drive. The supplies were delivered to seven schools in the cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va., as well as the counties of Amherst, Bedford, Campbell, Franklin and Pulaski, where they will fill the backpacks of local children this fall.

One hundred twenty-five golfers took to the links at the Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif., to participate in this year’s Golf Classic. CU Direct once again served as title sponsor, raising $75,000 for the state foundation for credit unions in California and Nevada. The event helps to fund the foundation’s Bite of Reality program. The program provides youth with a taste of real-world financial realities in a fun, interactive environment. So far this year the foundation has reached 16,500 young people throughout California and Nevada.

In addition to supporting of the OHS Humane Education program, a team of OnPoint volunteers will be visiting the OHS shelter in September 2019. As part of the program, OHS educators present at public and private schools to foster an environment of respect, responsibility and compassion for all animals. The team will learn more about the program’s impact and help socialize dogs and cats. Regular interaction with humans is a key part of helping animals prepare to be adopted.
Employees from the $1.3 billion Black Hills Federal Credit Union in Rapid City, S.D., prepare school supply donations. The credit union donated more than 120,000 school supplies to more than 60 area schools on Friday during its 23rd Annual School Supply Drive “Load the Bus” celebration. The drive provides more than 20,000 students in 17 communities across Black Hills and South Dakota with the supplies they need for a successful school year. Educators distribute the supplies to students as needed. To gather the necessary supplies, the credit union relies on donations from its members, the community and area businesses. Funds are also raised through a community-wide caramel roll sale and raffle. Additionally, the annual Bus-to-Business event gives area businesses and organizations the opportunity to contribute to the drive by helping to fill a school bus with supplies.
