Credit Unions Donate Funds to Charities & Youth Athletes
This week’s news also includes a shredding event, where 15,000 lbs. of paperwork and 1,410 lbs. of e-waste were destroyed.
Staff and their family members from the $206 million First Capital Federal Credit Union in York, Penn., take part in the Not One More – York Chapter 5K. The credit union selected Not One More as the second quarter charity to support through its First Cap Gives Back program. Through fundraising efforts, First Capital raised $2,363.44 for the Not One More – York Chapter.
Employees from the $378 million Garden Savings Federal Credit Union in Parsippany, N.J., present a $20,000 check to the Children’s Specialized Hospital of New Brunswick, N.J., and the Rutgers Youth Education and Employment Success Center of Newark, N.J. The donation will be split between the two organizations. The credit union raised the $20,000 at its ninth annual golf outing on July 22. Nearly 100 professionals from credit unions and industry businesses attended the outing.

The Fullerton Hills Softball team poses for a picture. The $771 million, Los Alamitos, Calif.-based Southland Credit Union donated funds to help the Fullerton Hills Softball’s 12U Gold All-Star Team make the journey to nationals. The North Orange County softball league’s team was a finalist at the Southern California Central B Districts Tournament and qualified for the Western National Championships when it finished in seventh place at the 2019 Southern California B State Championships. The donation will help the team with transportation, lodging and food. Southland is proud to sponsor a local sports program that empowers young women and teaches them team-building as well as leadership skills. Southland is also the official credit union of Long Beach State Athletics, supporting college athletes and providing them with the tools they need to have the financial future they deserve.
Fran Godfrey, president/CEO for the $181 million BlueOx Credit Union in Battle Creek, Mich., presents Cassandra Boyd, fundraising specialist for Senior Services of Southwest Michigan, with a $500 donation to Meals on Wheels. The donation was part of a “Scoop Up the Summer Savings” campaign, which runs until Sept. 30 and provides an entry to win $5,000 to those who finance or refinance an auto loan of $15,000 or more with BlueOx.
Volunteers from the Humane Society and the $4.7 billion Redwood Credit Union in Santa Rosa, Calif., pose for a picture at the Mendocino County Shred-a-Thon. RCU hosted the free document shredding event at its Ukiah branch on July 13. Approximately 350 local residents brought old financial documents and other confidential paperwork – 15,000 lbs. in total – to be safely shredded on site by Shred-IT. Approximately 1,410 lbs. of electronic waste (e-waste) was also safely disposed of by Conservation Corps North Bay. The Humane Society of Inland Mendocino County collected $1,087 at the event and brought adoptable pets, several of which found homes that day.
