The $88.1 million Northern Star Credit Union in Portsmouth, Va., donated $5,000 to support the families of the victims of the May 31 shooting at a Virginia Beach municipal building where a gunman fatally shot 12 people and wounded five others.

“We had to do something and we had to help them,” Northern Star’s Chief Financial Officer Joann Brown said. “While no monetary value could ever replace the pain those families feel, we have always helped people for the past 91 years and were not about to turn a blind eye. We ask our fellow credit unions and members to consider supporting the cause. The Hampton Roads community is stronger when we come together.”

Northern Star CU’s staff and members wore blue on Monday to honor the lives lost and in support of the first-responders.

The credit union’s contribution will be disbursed to the United Way of South Hampton Roads, which partnered with the City of Virginia Beach to create a Tragedy Fund.

All of the proceeds will support the families of the victims.
