Maine’s credit union community is mourning the death of Steve J. Obrin, retired president/CEO of the $387 million Atlantic Federal Credit Union in Brunswick.

Obrin, who was 76, died at his home in Topsham on April 4, according to the Maine Credit Union League.

He began working for Atlantic FCU when it was known as St. John’s Credit Union in 1975. He retired from the credit union in 2009 as president/CEO.

He also served as a director for the Maine league and chaired the board of directors for the $341 million Tricorp Federal Credit Union in Westbrook.

“Steve Obrin, was a leader in the credit union movement – constantly looking to improve the financial quality of life for his members,” Roger Sirois, president/CEO of Atlantic FCU, said.  “He was always surveying better ways to assist others in need, both professionally and personally. As my mentor, I can’t thank him enough for his guidance and leadership, but most importantly, his friendship.”

Obrin is survived by three daughters, a son and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service was held last week.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Brackett Funeral Home in Brunswick.
