This week’s news includes support for children through the Make-A-Wish program and $237k in charitable donations.

PenFed

Service-dog-in-training Journey (left) and employees from the $24.4 billion Pentagon Federal Credit Union in Mclean, Va., present a donation to Lucky Paws Dog Rescue. The group is joined by the Northwest Battle Buddies’ volunteer puppy raiser program. In total, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center donated $15,000 to Lucky Paws Dog Rescue, Meals on Wheels Lane County and Volunteers in Medicine. PenFed employees met with the charities in March and presented them with the checks. These donations are part of PenFed’s commitment to giving $100,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Eugene, Ore., area this year. Each quarter, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center employees select local charities that align with the credit union’s core values of giving back and making a difference in the communities PenFed serves.

Zeal CU

The $600 million, Livonia, Mich.-based awarded a total of $22,000 in scholarships to 11 members at its 65th Annual Membership Meeting on March 27 at the Dearborn Inn. It was the largest number of scholarships awarded in one year and raised the total amount to more than $270,000 since the scholarship program was introduced 25 years ago.

Employees from the We Promise Foundation, the charitable arm of the $2.2 billion Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach, Va., present a $200,000 donation to members of Toby’s Dream, a local charity. CAP COM FCU

Ryan Dare, an employee at the $1.8 billion CAP COM Federal Credit Union in Albany, N.Y., reveals to Evelyn, Make-A-Wish Northeast New York 2016 Wish Kid, that she was granted a wish trip to a Disney theme park. Through this collaborative partnership with Make-A-Wish Northeast New York, CAP COM Cares Foundation, the charitable arm of the credit union, has granted three children their wishes over the past three years.

Jeanne D’Arc CU

A group of students participate in Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union’s ninth annual MoneyStrong for Life Fair on March 27. The students were among more than 350 seniors from Lowell High School and Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School who participated in the fair. During the fair, students role-played themselves at age 25 and were tasked with making real-life financial decisions to successfully manage their income, savings, credit cards and the high cost of self-supporting. More than 70 individuals, the majority of whom were employees from the $1.3 billion Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union in Lowell, Mass., volunteered to manage the booths and assist students in their decision-making process. Representatives from Lowell General Hospital, MAPFRE Insurance, Stanton Insurance, Middlesex Community College and Girls Inc. also volunteered.

Pelican State CU

The $367 million Pelican State Credit Union in Baton Rouge, La., celebrates the opening of its second branch in Opelousas, La., by giving away free crawfish, corn and potatoes to 200 of its members who stopped by its St. Landry branch at 2508 South Union St. Members also received a custom Pelican crawfish tray and copy of “The History of Pelican’s St. Landry Branch.”
