Fred A. Hilley, a 30-year board member of SAFE Federal Credit Union in Sumter, S.C., passed away at his home last month.
He was 85.
Hilley joined SAFE’s board of directors in 1999, serving continuously until his death.
During his tenure, the credit union grew from 81,983 members to more than 124,000 members, and $270 million in assets to $1 billion in assets.
Hilley was a founding member and president of SAFE’s Easy Street Club beginning in 1989. He attended his final Easy Street Club dinner event in November where he was recognized not only for his 30-year commitment to the organization but also for his service as an Air Force veteran during the Korean and Vietnam eras.
Throughout his three decades of volunteer service, Hilley served on the supervisory committee. He was also past chair of SAFE’s building, funds management, budget, planning and travel committees.
“From his time as an Airman, an engineer and state government employee, Fred understood the needs of our members,” Kay Oldhouser-Davis, chair of SAFE Federal Credit Union’s board of directors, said. “Our thoughts are with his family. Fred will be greatly missed by all of us.”
