CO-OP Launches Cardless Cash Access in ATMs

Credit unions can add the feature to their own mobile banking apps.

CO-OP unveils new “Cardless Cash Access” feature for its ATM terminal driving services.

ATMs in the massive CO-OP Financial Services network could soon allow members to get cash without inserting a plastic card.

The payments and financial technology company announced this week that it is rolling out a new “Cardless Cash Access” feature for its ATM terminal driving services, which will allow members to stage ATM cash withdrawals via mobile app. When members arrive at the ATM, they scan a QR code with their mobile app to authenticate the transaction and retrieve their cash.

CO-OP Financial Services manages a network of almost 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs.

Credit unions add the feature to their own mobile banking apps. The technology works on Diebold Nixdorf and NCR ATMs in the CO-OP ATM network, the company said.

“As with most iterative technology, the ATM channel continues to evolve alongside user expectations,” CO-OP President and CEO Todd Clark said. “One of the most significant ways the ATM improves is through integration with other technology, whether that’s back-office data and reporting tools or consumer-facing UX software. Seamlessly connecting the ATM to the smart devices consumers rarely leave home without is a continuation of this progress. It’s something we know credit union members, especially those who are highly mobile and technology savvy, are going to love.”

The advent of cardless transactions will also help cut fraud by making card skimming impossible, CO-OP Financial Services said.

“By removing the card from the transaction all together, the technology eliminates the risk of mag-stripe data compromises at the terminal,” the company explained.

Cardless ATM capabilities will also boost the credit union industry’s shift to digital products and services, CO-OP Financial Services added.

The company said it was the first credit union fintech provider to offer cardless cash access as part of an ATM network and terminal driving services.
