Construction is underway in Sterling Heights, Mich., for the new headquarters of Christian Financial Credit Union.

The credit union announced last week that it broke ground in March on an 8.5-acre site for the 40,000-square-foot building, which will house back office operations and a member solutions center. Construction of the new headquarters is expected to be completed by May 2019.

"Simply put, we are outgrowing our current facilities," Patricia Campbell, president/CEO of the $392 million Christian Financial, said. "It's a good problem to have, but it presents some challenges. Today, our talent team is spread out among several different offices, and those that are located at our main office are sharing close quarters. We want to bring everyone back home under one roof. The new environment will be conducive to collaboration so that our staff can learn from each other and be inspired by the work their teammates are doing."

Currently, about 112 full-time employees and 29 part-time employees work for Christian Financial. Five years ago, the credit union employed 89 full-time staffers and 40 part-timers.

Since 2013, the credit union has posted positive growth in the key performance metrics of assets, loans, market share and membership, according to its NCUA financial performance reports.

The new building will feature several different collaborative spaces distinct from one another, giving staff members the opportunity to change their environments throughout the day and equip them for tasks without being tied down to a physical location, Christian Financial said in a prepared statement

The credit union, chartered in 1967 from a small branch in a Detroit church, is currently based in Roseville. Christian Financial operates 10 branches and serves more than 42,000 members. The Roseville location will remain open when the new headquarters is ready for occupancy next year.
