A Minneapolis-area CUSO changed its name to The Servion Group Jan. 1 to better reflect its emphasis on service and to make its identity standout better online.

When three Minnesota credit unions formed CU Companies in 1987, it focused on helping its owners pool resources to offer mortgages, and later created a correspondent channel for financial institutions to sell mortgages to the secondary market.

Over the years, the CUSO's ownership has grown to 60 Minnesota credit unions. It now has 200 employees serving more than 300 financial institutions across the country. Its services have grown to include mortgage, title, realty, financial advisory, and commercial loan resources.

“We've built a company that's gathered the people, systems, and scale to serve our owners and partners, and all who use our products and services,” said President/CEO Brad Crandall. “We will be accurate and timely, we will provide solutions, and we will contribute to the success of our partners.”

The new name was designed to emphasize service, with the “ion” added for emphasis, said Matthew Doffing, its content strategist.

As the CU Companies' circle of partners has grown, so has the need for a name with more visibility. “We do think our name will enhance our ability to be found online,” he said.

The three Minneapolis-Saint Paul founders were Spire Credit Union, City-County Federal Credit Union and Wings Financial Credit Union. City-County FCU became part of Wings Financial CU in 2011.
