Credit unions, leagues and other supporters have contributed $1,022,375 to help staff and volunteers affected by Tropical Storm Harvey, the National Credit Union Foundation reported Thursday.

"We're working with the Cornerstone Foundation and they've already disbursed, or are in the process of granting, funds to 275 people," Christopher Morris said, director of communications for the Foundation in Madison Wis.

The Foundation activated the online disaster relief system CUAid.coop on Aug. 28 to raise money for credit union people in Houston and throughout southeastern Texas.

"There is a huge need," Morris said.

Indeed, several CEOS have reported many employees had their homes and their cars damaged or destroyed by the massive floods. Some did not have insurance coverage for their homes. In addition, some employees have been displaced by the storm.

The Foundation's disaster relief system remains activated. Donations can be made at CUAid.coop.

The CUNA Mutual Group reported Wednesday that it has processed approximately 75 credit union insurance claims, and it will be winding down its onsite operations in the Lone Star State.

Working with the Cornerstone Credit Union League, CMG said it has reached all credit union customers who were impacted by the tropical storm.

The CMG claims team, which will be returning to Madison on Friday, is monitoring Hurricane Irma and will be prepared to mobilize quickly if needed, Wendy Serafin, CMG spokesperson said.

Caroline Willard, president/CEO of the Cornerstone league, said Thursday that all but three credit unions are operational.

"Tremendous progress has been made, but of course more dollars are needed to fund the recovery efforts," Willard said. "The Cornerstone Credit Union League and its member credit unions are humbled and moved to tears by the national outpouring of support for the Gulf Coast.  We are praying that Irma's impact will be minimal, but of course we stand in solidarity with the Florida credit unions should the worst come to pass."
