News about the NCUA's most recent moves, overdraft fees and racism in the workplace got CU Times readers talking this past week. Here's what they had to say.

"NCUA Proposed Merger Rules Unnecessarily Burdensome: Trades," Aug. 8

This is absolutely a problem that the NCUA needs to address. As someone who saw a few mergers go to a CU that was "paying" the manager/board incentives, I was happy to see this proposed rule. In fact, it is not unusual for the surviving CU to quickly shut down the local offices of the merged CU because the true interest was not to serve the members, but to take over the members' equity. Someone needs to be the watchdog over this process and to keep it transparent.

"McWatters: No Taxpayer Funds Lost as Result of Settlement Legal Bills," Aug. 8

As an owner of my credit union and a taxpayer … I did indeed pay for this! "Your honor, I think the $X billion is a fair and equitable settlement; but shouldn't there be some compensation to my client?" The NCUA tried to run with the big dogs and got the south end of the dog!

"These People Pay the Most Overdraft Fees," Aug. 11

Nice one-sided view! I especially like the "perverse" statement. Shows the unbiased nature of the author. What is not shown is the alternative and the way it was. In the old days, you were expected to balance your account and held responsible for doing so. If you didn't … you lost the account. Anyone want to go back to that, especially with auto-debit and auto-credit of practically all your transactions? You want the convenience of a quick swipe at the store for your purchase, but no one is tracking that in a two-owner account. And, when was the last time you balanced your checking account? I stopped in 2010. I do, however, check my activity every day and my next overdraft will be my second. That first one still burns!!! An overdraft is simply the "cost" of convenience. Feel free to stop using it any time you want!

"Can Employers Fire Racists? Should They?" Aug. 16

Wow. I have to raise concerns about this article. Not every person in Charlottesville protesting the tearing down of statues is a racist. There were racists protesting that, but many in that protest were normal Americans as averse to racism as you or me. Assuming they are racists and terminating them accordingly is wrongful. Also, let's not be naïve. There are other racist groups aside from white supremacists. As a society we still have a ways to go on the whole race matter.
