Recent articles on student loan debt, an alleged discrimination incident, member dissatisfaction and military lending rules got CU Times readers fired up to share their thoughts. Here's what they had to say.

"Lawmakers Pass Bill Allowing Student Loan Debt to Be Discharged in Bankruptcy," May 8

Student debt is NOT generally co-signed. And that tired old argument about "financial literacy and responsibility" doesn't seem to apply to the President of the United States, who declared bankruptcy not once but four times. Bang that old drum all you want: College debt is now held by one out of every six American adults. They're not all irresponsible children with useless degrees.

ANYONE who walks into ANY financial institution wearing a hood should be asked to remove it or leave the premises, PERIOD. And YES – allowing her to wear a hood at a teller station could – and most likely would – threaten the safety of the entire staff and any customers who may be inside when a hooded robber – masquerading as a practicing Muslim, walks in and starts shooting up the place. Don't be an idiot.

The video shows [the employee's] bigotry, hate and intolerance. It is not alleged, it is intentional. Please file a complaint against the credit union and the bigot employee. Credit unions are under the umbrella of the NCUA.

"CUs 'Failing to Provide' Needed Services, Survey Shows," May 10

This is a very small sample to infer that credit unions are not offering the services needed or desired by members. There are approximately 100 million members in the credit union world. Additionally, we don't know how the survey was designed and executed.

"Trades Tally Hurt From Military Lending Rules," May 15

Credit unions can be patient and not make the loans. It is our brave women and men who get shafted from a solid source of loans that have their well-being at heart. Typical academic. Knows what works in theory but not in practice.

Under the guise of "helping," the government is harming the very people it wants to protect. A narrow rule targeting title loan stores and true payday lenders could have been written, but instead they throw out a one-size-fits-all regulation that will end up restricting access to loans for service members who may need them. The DOD and CFPB would do better to address the issues that cause service members to need access to these types of products.
