The Trump Administration's plan to cut funding for the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund got some readers protesting the decision and others backing the president. Here's what they had to say about that topic as well as other recent CU Times stories.

"Credit Unions to Fight Trump Plan to Eliminate CDFI Program," March 16

This is quite disturbing. The very fabric of mainstream America contains threads designed to strengthen the low-income, low-wealth citizens. CDFI provides financial resources to financial institutions that go directly toward the least-served. How does it make sense – in any way – to eliminate a program that does nothing but good? CDFI has been a responsible, accountable and vital component of the financial services outreach effort for over 20 years. I can't help but wonder how more spending on defense will help those who need access to better financial products, services and advice.

I wonder if CUNA and NAFCU bothered to reach out to their member credit unions to see how they felt about this issue before launching their staunch opposition to Trump's plan to eliminate the CDFI program? If so, I must have missed the note.

This may very well be a good program but I don't see why the federal government should be funding it to the tune of $200 million per year. I think it is more reasonable that funding assistance should come from states that are interested in improving their communities.

"Rounds to Bankers: Abandon CU Tax Effort & Unite in Fight for Reg Reform," March 23

Wonderful suggestion by the Senator. If the trades and bankers don't heed this advice, the losers will continue to be the smaller institutions that face "one size fits all" regulation that most times has no relevance to their operation. Our trades need to get off their search for banking enemies and realize what is killing credit unions and ultimately them.

"Trump Administration Says Makeup of CFPB Is Unconstitutional," March 20

Funny how President Trump is portrayed as a dictator, but when one is in operation like at the CFPB, that's somehow OK! President Trump needs to end these shenanigans!

"Credit Unions Try to Counter Trump's Dismantling of CDFI," March 22

Credit union leaders need to understand we have a $20 trillion deficit and act responsibly. President Trump is doing what is financially healthy for America. There is no need for some government agency to do what is good for credit unions and communities. That's what credit unions do.
