The NCUA said Friday it banned a former branch manager and a loan officer.
Mireya Guadalupe Gonzalez, who worked as a branch manager for the Sharebuilders Federal Credit Union in Northridge, Calif., was sentenced on Feb. 1, 2012 to 18 months in federal prison for embezzlement and filing a false income tax return.
She also was ordered to pay $868,122 in restitution.
Mireya moved money from dormant accounts to accounts in her name, her husband's name and those of her children. She used the stolen funds to buy jewelry and other luxury items.
Her theft led to the credit union's liquidation in April 2007, though Gonzalez was not indicted until October 2010, according to court records.
John Scalzo, a former loan officer for the $1 billion Consumer Credit Union Gurnee, Ill., was sentenced on July 19, 2013 to two years and nine months in federal prison for bank fraud and money laundering. Before he worked at CCU, he also was a loan officer for the Fox River State Bank in Burlington, Wis.
In 2008 and 2009, Scalzo originated and approved nine loans worth $1.4 million, most in the form of lines of credit, in the name of unqualified or unknowing borrowers by forging their signatures on loan documents. He also used funds from some of these loans to pay balances due for previous fraudulent loans he took out.
At Fox River State Bank, he originated $843,000 in fraudulent loans and at CCU he originated $615,000 in fake loans, according to court documents.
Scalzo was also ordered to pay $679,737 in restitution.
