The National Credit Union Foundation and the Louisiana Credit Union League have raised more than $255,000 over the last two weeks to help Louisiana flood victims.
Christopher Morris, director of communications for the Foundation said Thursday more than $150,000 has been raised since the organization activated its online disaster relief system CUAId.coop on Aug. 15.
What's more, the Louisiana league reported Wednesday that its statewide and national social media challenge, #LACUStrong, has raised more than $105,000 since Aug. 16.
During the height of the Louisiana storm that dumped 6.9 trillion gallons of rain in the state from Aug. 8 to Aug. 14, about 20 credit unions were forced to closed branches and offices. Some of the branches and office were closed for days in the aftermath.
In addition, the Louisiana league estimated about 300 credit union employees have been impacted by the flood that the American Red Cross said was the worst natural disaster since Superstorm Sandy hit the northeast coast four years ago.
As many as 188,729 houses and more than 500,000 people, 11% of the state's population, were affected by the flood with reports of $20 billion in damages, the Louisiana league reported. Additionally, an estimated 7,000 businesses that employ nearly 74,000 people are in the flood-affected areas.
The Louisiana league said it will continue its social media challenge through Sept. 9.
To participate in the Louisiana CU Strong Challenge, credit unions are welcome to post a video or their official challenge accepted photo using the hashtag #LACUStrong. Make sure to email the video/photo to Lacey Hyer, [email protected], the Louisiana league's vice president of communications and public relations, along with the main contact for the challenge.
Leagues, vendors and other credit union supporters are also welcome to participate in the social media challenge.
