Tommy Robertson, a former attorney for the board of directors of the $200 million Singing River Federal Credit Union, was sentenced to two years in prison last week for embezzling more than $379,000 from the Moss Point, Miss.-based cooperative.
On June 27, Special Judge Richard McKenzie also ordered Robertson, a former Mississippi State Senator, to serve eight years of supervised release following his prison release, according to Mississippi Assistant District Attorney Sherie Wade.
Judge McKenzie also fined Robertson $1,000 and ordered him to pay $60,000 in restitution.
Wade said the restitution was less than expected because Singing River FCU received insurance money that covered part of the loss. Additionally, Robertson paid $16,000 of what was owed.
Robertson pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement in December 2015.
As the board attorney, he used his position to embezzle $379,594 from a $484,092 residential construction loan through the credit union that he secured for a couple who was building a home, according to prosecutors.
Robertson stole the money in April 2013 to pay his debts.
Robertson, who lost his law license, served in the Mississippi State Senate from 1992 to 2008.
Prior to sentencing, Robertson's lawyer, James Heidelberg of Pascagoula, told Judge McKenzie that his client was a broken man who filed for bankruptcy, lost his home, his assets, his friends and his reputation, according to local media reports.
