An eye for design helped Firstmark Credit Union, through Credit Unions for Kids, raise $2,000 for the Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
As part of San Antonio's annual Fiesta celebration, Fiesta royalty, nonprofit organizations, area business, local officials and individuals create, buy, sell and trade medals worn throughout the 11-day event.
This year, out of 300 medals submitted to compete for top honors in 20 categories for both individuals and organizations, the San Antonio Express News selected Firstmark's 2016 Fiesta medal as the winner in the nonprofit category.

"Firstmark is excited to have the winning design and see the incredible response to the medal," Wendy Bryant-Beswick, svp/chief marketing officer said. "Most importantly, we are pleased to make this donation to Children's Hospital of San Antonio through CUFK."
While touring the emergency room at Children's Hospital of San Antonio, Donna Prado, senior graphics designer at Firstmark, was inspired by a giraffe painted on the long arm of a piece of operating room equipment. Moved by the sense of comfort the giraffe provided sick and injured children, she reinterpreted that image in her medal design of a cartoon giraffe hugging an oversized heart.
It proved to be a hit with credit union members as well as the public. All 810 medals sold within a week, raising just over $2,000. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to CUFK to benefit the Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
CUFK partners with the Children's Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that works to increase awareness of children's health issues, as well as raise funds for children's hospitals and medical research.
