It was a busy week for credit union HR departments across the country, as numerous new hires and promotions were announced in addition to three executive retirements. Plus, credit union marketing vendor WordCom hired a new executive.

WEST

Stanley R. Swenson, Jr. (pictured), president/CEO for the $1 billion Northrop Grumman Federal Credit Union in Gardena, Calif., retired March 31. Swenson began his career at the then Northrop Credit Union in May 1979, serving as assistant general manager and controller. He then became president/CEO in May 1982, becoming the fourth and longest tenured leader of the credit union since its inception in 1946. Matthew Herbert replaced Swenson as president/CEO effective April 1. This made Herbert the fifth leader of NGFCU since its inception in 1946.

Michelle Poturich, a 10-year professional in the investment services industry, joined the $979 million Oregon State Credit Union in Corvallis, Ore., as a CUSO Financial Services financial advisor. Poturich came to Oregon State Credit Union from San Diego, where she developed a strong track record of building relationships and working to provide solutions to members for more than a decade as a financial advisor and regional investment platform manager.

Stan Abrams (pictured), president/CEO for the $260 million San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union in San Diego, is retiring on March 31, 2017. Abrams has served as president/CEO since 2010, first as interim CEO and then as the officially appointed president/CEO beginning Nov. 1, 2010.

SOUTH

The $1.7 billion ORNL Federal Credit Union in Oak Ridge, Tenn., hired Alex Mendes as CFO. Mendes assumed his role effective Feb. 8, 2016 and succeeded Colin Anderson, who was appointed president/CEO of ORNL in July 2015. Mendes brings more than 24 years of financial experience to the position and will play a key role in developing and driving the credit union's direction, growth and member experience.

One employee retired and another was promoted at the $222 million New Horizons Credit Union in Mobile, Ala. Edith G. Franklin was promoted to CFO. Franklin joined New Horizons as controller in April, 2015. Prior to joining New Horizons, Franklin was employed with Hutto & Carver, P.A. and the $565 million Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union in Pensacola, Fla., where she held numerous positions including accountant, supervisor of accounting, vice president of accounting, vice president of financial services and senior vice president/CFO. James B. Knight retired on March 31. Knight served as the vice president of collections since joining New Horizons 28 years ago.

EAST

The $5.2 billion Teachers Federal Credit Union in Hauppauge, N.Y., promoted Amanda Christensen (pictured) to assistant vice president of loan servicing. In her new position, she will oversee the mortgage servicing and loan records departments as well as the servicing of all mortgages, commercial and consumer loans. Christensen joined TFCU in 2005 as a teller and subsequently held several positions of increasing responsibility within the operations and lending departments.

The $1.1 billion Hanscom Federal Credit Union in Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., hired Susan Dunbar as vice president of mortgages. She leads a 15-member staff and manages mortgage sales, processing and servicing. Most recently, Dunbar was vice president of lending at the $58 million New England Teamsters Federal Credit Union in Arlington, Mass.

MIDWEST

The $2.9 billion Veridian Credit Union in Waterloo, Iowa promoted an employee and hired another. Brett Engstrom (pictured) was promoted to vice president of information technology. Engstrom has worked at Veridian for 18 years, most recently as manager of web services. Douglas Moore was hired as learning and development specialist. Moore was previously a technology coordinator at Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.

The $1 billion Firefly Credit Union in Burnsville, Minn., hired Jon Maier as Minneapolis retail sales manager. In his new role, Maier will be responsible for overseeing Firefly's Minneapolis branch location and making sure it meets the credit union's high level of service to its members. Maier has more than 15 years of experience working for financial institutions in the Twin Cities metro including Wells Fargo and BMO Harris Bank.

Rachael Reiling was promoted to business relationship manager at the $825 million SPIRE Credit Union in Falcon Heights Minn. An 11-year financial services industry professional, she began her career in St. Paul, Minn., with American Bank, working every position at the branch and quickly reaching management level. She continued in a leadership capacity for Associated Bank before being hired by SPIRE in January 2014 as Eagan branch manager.

VENDORS

Marketing intelligence veteran Sean Mulvaney joined WordCom as vice president of product development. Mulvaney most recently worked with Speedeon as director of sales, national accounts in the marketing services division at Deluxe Corp. He spent the bulk of his career with ACTON Marketing (Deluxe purchased ACTON in 2013). At ACTON, as managing partner – financial services, he helped grow one of the leading providers of financial marketing services to banks and credit unions across the country.
