Virginia has long claimed it's a state for lovers and a new survey appears to confirm that notion.

Citizens of that commonwealth will spend an average of $87 on their partners this Valentine's Day — the fifth highest amount in the nation, according to a survey of 3,121 Americans recently conducted by Finder.com, a personal finance comparison and education website.

Folks in Kansas are expected to spend the most in the nation for the holiday – $117, with citizens of Nevada, Idaho, North Dakota and Hawaii rounding out the top five.

But Cupid has a bit of work to do in New Hampshire, where citizens are expected to spend the least — a paltry $31. (Perhaps people in the Granite State are too tired after this week's presidential primary to go shopping for a loved one?) South Carolina, Delaware, Maine and Vermont rounded out the bottom five.

For all Americans, the average gift will cost $42. And Americans will spend an average of $91 on a Valentine's Day gift and an experience — such as a meal or entertainment.

The favorite activity for Americans to engage in on Valentine's Day is a trip to a restaurant. Some 34% of the respondents intend to take their significant other out for a meal.

But couch potatoes can take heart too. About 27% of respondents are planning a low key celebration of watching a movie at home.

More than one third of Americans may be sleeping on the couch after Valentine's Day, however. That's the number of people who don't plan on buying a gift for their partner. Some 44% of the female respondents said they were not planning to buy a gift for their significant other, while 31% of the men said they were opting out of this romantic activity.

People also tend to get cheaper the longer they are in a relationship. In the first five years of a romance, people are likely to spend an average of $73.76 on a gift. That amount drops to $49 for those who have been in a relationship for 20 years or longer.

Female fiancées are the most likely to receive a gift; 80% of those prospective brides can expect a gift on Sunday. And they will receive the most expensive gifts — costing an average of $96. On the other hand, husbands are the most likely to go empty handed; only 51% of the people in this group are likely to receive a gift.
