With the 2016 Grammy Awards ceremony coming up on Monday, Feb. 15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and with tax season and conference karaoke season well underway, CU Times compiled a list of songs and performers that incorporate financial services industry keywords.
Grammy-winning titles we found include “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits (1985), which won Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal; “Money Maker” by Ludacris & Pharrell Williams, the Best Rap Song for 2006 and “Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue” by Terri Lyne, 2013's Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
The Cash family took home multiple Grammys for songs, including:
- Johnny Cash, Best Country Vocal Performance for “Folsom Prison Blues” in 1968 and Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “Solitary Man” in 2000;
- June Carter Cash, Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Keep On The Sunny Side” in 2003; and
- Rosanne Cash, Best American Roots Performance for “A Feather's Not A Bird” in 2014.
Eddie Money's “Take Me Home Tonight” received a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1986.
Some artists released multiple songs with financial references, including the Beatles (“Can't Buy Me Love”, 1964; “Penny Lane”, 1966; “Taxman”, 1966; “Baby You're a Rich Man”, 1967 and “You Never Give Me Your Money”, 1969) and AC/DC (“What Do You Do For Money Honey”, 1980; “Back In Business”, 1985; the Grammy-nominated “Money Talks”, 1985 and “Money Made”, 2008).
Then there was Wobbly Bob's “(Cash Machine Swallowed My) Debit Card Blues.” which did not win any awards.
Following is a selection of another 22 songs with some financial connections, presented in chronological order:
